Rangehood Filters: Buyer's Guide

A rangehood filter catches grease from cooking, or absorbs odours, before the air is vented outside or pushed back into the kitchen. Filters clog over time, which reduces airflow and makes the hood less effective and noisier. Grease build-up can also become a fire risk. We stock aluminium grease filters and charcoal carbon filters for brands including Fisher & Paykel, Robinhood, Parmco, Smeg, Baumatic, Classique, Bosch, Electrolux, Westinghouse, Blanco and Asko.

How to find the right filter for your rangehood

Start with the model number of your rangehood. It is usually on a sticker or rating plate inside the canopy, and you may need to remove the filter to see it. Check it against the models listed in each product title and description. The same filter often suits several brands, because many rangehoods are made by the same manufacturer, so the listed models matter more than the brand name.

Size matters as much as the model. Take out your old filter and measure its length and width in millimetres, then compare it with the size in the product title. A filter that is slightly too small can leave gaps, and one that is slightly too large will not seat properly. Also check whether your rangehood takes more than one filter, as some listings are a single filter and others are a pack of two.

Types of rangehood filter

Filter type What it does Signs it needs cleaning or replacing
Aluminium grease filter Traps grease and cooking residue as air passes through the metal mesh Visible grease build-up, a sticky or clogged mesh, dents or damage, or weak extraction
Charcoal carbon filter Absorbs cooking odours in rangehoods that recirculate air instead of venting outside Lingering cooking smells, or it has not been replaced for as long as your manual recommends
Grease filter paper and carbon pack Combined replacement filter material for hoods that use disposable filters Discoloured, greasy or clogged material

Many rangehoods use an aluminium filter and a charcoal filter together. If your hood vents outside through a duct, it usually only needs the aluminium filter. If it recirculates air into the kitchen, it normally needs the charcoal filter as well.

Fitting tips

  • Turn the rangehood off at the wall and let it cool completely before you take the filters out.
  • Take note of how the old filter sits, including which way it faces, and fit the new one the same way.
  • Check your manual before washing a filter. Many aluminium filters can be washed, but charcoal filters are generally replaced rather than cleaned.
  • Make sure the filter is completely dry and seated properly before you turn the rangehood back on.
  • Do not run the rangehood without its filters fitted.

Changing a filter does not need tools and is a simple job. For anything electrical inside the rangehood, use a licensed electrician.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the right filter for my rangehood?

Find the model number on the sticker or rating plate inside the canopy, then match it to the models listed in the product title. Also measure your old filter in millimetres and compare it with the size in the title, as the size needs to match as well as the model.

What is the difference between an aluminium filter and a charcoal filter?

An aluminium filter traps grease from cooking, while a charcoal carbon filter absorbs odours in rangehoods that recirculate air instead of venting outside. Some rangehoods use both, so check which your model takes.

Can I wash my rangehood filter, or do I need to replace it?

Many aluminium filters can be cleaned and reused, but check your manual for how yours should be washed. Charcoal filters are generally replaced rather than washed, and your manual will say how often.

How many filters do I need?

It depends on your rangehood, as some take one filter and others take two or more. Check how many are fitted now and read the product title, since some listings are a single filter and others are a pack of two.

What if my rangehood filter size or model isn't listed?

Send us your rangehood brand, model number, the filter size in millimetres and a photo of the old filter. Some filters are listed as enquiry only, and we may be able to source one that isn't shown on the website.
